cognitive assessments

What is a cognitive assessment?

At Exploring Minds, we offer standalone cognitive assessments using the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, 4th Edition (WAIS IV). In short, the WAIS is internationally recognised as an IQ test, but it is so much more than that. A WAIS assessment can tell you about your strengths and difficulties in several different cognitive domains, including verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory and processing speed.

Why have a cognitive assessment?

People benefit from cognitive assessments for all sorts of reasons. Perhaps they have recognised that they have specific difficulties in one of the areas covered by the assessment. Their partner or employer might have raised concerns for example about memory or processing speed. Some people are interested to know more about their own abilities, and for a small number of individuals, an application to Mensa might be on the cards! Even if you're not the next Stephen Hawking, a cognitive assessment can help to understand your strengths and weaknesses. Having a better understanding of your cognitive skills can assist you in seeking reasonable adjustments at work, school or University, and can help others to understand how to better support you.

Whilst a cognitive assessment cannot replace a full neuropsychological assessment at a memory clinic if you have serious age-related concerns about memory, it can shed light on memory weaknesses and potentially even act as a baseline of your abilities in case you develop problems in later life.

What does the assessment process involve?

An initial consultation is required to gather important background information, and establish the reasons you are seeking a cognitive assessment. Following this, we will undertake the WAIS assessment together. On average, the WAIS takes around 1.5 hours to administer, although it can take as little as one hour and as long as two.

Following the assessment, we carefully calculate your scores and interpret your performance. You will receive a report containing the interpretation and bespoke recommendations. A feedback session is offered to answer any questions you might have about the report.

How much does a cognitive assessment cost?

£650, including all of the steps detailed above.
